Artistic Dance Session with K. Monique Studio

When K. Monique Studio and I connected about doing an artistic session for their company dancers, I was immediately excited. These dancers are heading into competition season, which means months of training, refining technique, and working toward some seriously impressive skills. Our goal for this session was to create images that highlight all of that hard work โ€” strength, movement, and artistry โ€” in a way that feels dramatic and modern.

As a dance photographer Fort Wayne studios trust, I love creating sessions that go beyond traditional picture day portraits and really showcase what dancers are capable of.

Artistic Dance Portraits That Highlight Strength and Movement

For this session, we built a dramatic set on a black backdrop so the focus stayed completely on the dancers and their movement. Artistic sessions like this are designed to feel different from traditional recital portraits.

Rather than smiling, brightly lit poses, we focus on action and artistry, like floor poses, extensions, leaps, and shapes that show the strength and control dancers have worked so hard to master.

The lighting also plays a huge role. Instead of flat, even lighting used for traditional portraits, these sessions use more directional light to sculpt the dancerโ€™s shape and highlight muscle definition and movement. The result is images that feel powerful, modern, and editorial.

Wardrobe That Keeps the Focus on the Dancer

Another big difference between recital portraits and artistic sessions is the wardrobe.

For recital portraits, dancers wear their recital costumes. But for artistic sessions, we keep things much more minimal. Most dancers wear athletic sets, leotards, or simple dancewear that allows their lines and movement to really stand out.

This keeps the focus exactly where it should be โ€” on the dancerโ€™s technique and artistry.

Elevated Headshots for Every Dancer

During artistic sessions we also run a separate headshot station so dancers can get updated portraits at the same time.

These arenโ€™t your typical dance picture day headshots. Instead of a simple white backdrop, we use professional lighting to create images that feel more like high-end fashion beauty portraits.

With over a decade of experience in lighting and portrait posing, we guide each dancer through subtle adjustments in posture, expression, and angles to take a shot from good to incredible. These headshots end up being some of the dancersโ€™ favorite images in their galleries.

Why Studios Love Artistic Dance Sessions

Sessions like this are a great complement to traditional recital portrait days. They give company dancers the chance to capture more advanced movement and create images that feel truly unique.

Studio owners also love having these striking images available for marketing, social media, and competition season announcements. And of course, dancers love seeing just how incredible they look on the back of the camera.

Seeing their reactions when they realize what they just created is honestly one of my favorite parts of the entire process.
